PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY (CD) 9-25286 JAPANESE #2

This is the last of the gatefold CDs for "Around The World In A Day".  This is the alternate disc pressed in Japan.  This disc would become the style used on most subsequent pressings of the album on CD with the exception of the green lettering.  It's also the first CD version to feature the Paisley Park logo directly on the disc.  Both the Target versions don't have the logo.

Again, as previously mentioned, the difference between these three versions is the disc.  The gatefold long boxes and the cardboard sleeves were all printed in the US and they are the same for each version.

Of the three, this is the hardest to find.  It is also the most expensive of the group.  The sku is 0 75992-25286 7.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY (CD) 9-25286 GERMAN

So tonight I wanna discuss the second gatefold CD version of the record.

Like the Japanese pressing, the disc has the Target shape on the disc itself.  The distinguishing feature is along the bottom where it says, "Made in West Germany".  At the time, Germany was still divided between east and west.

The longbox is the same as the two Japanese pressings.  The long three sided gatefold box and the cardboard sleeve for all three versions of the disc were printed in the US and there are no variations between them.

You can see these versions popping up on eBay now and again.  Sometimes, they ask astronomical prices for them.  Occasionally, you can find them at a reasonable price.  Be sure to get a good look at the disc before you purchase so you can see which version you're buying.  And it should be noted, these long boxes have a flap over the top.  It's very rare to find a version with the flap still intact.  The flap contains the bar code sku information.  The sku number is 0 75992-52862 7.  Happy hunting!

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY (CD) 9-25286 JAPANESE #1

Although I have more cassette versions of "Around The World In A Day" I don't have scans for them yet.  So I'm going to move on to CDs for now.

This album has an interesting history.  I'm not sure exactly why, but the original copies of this CD were pressed in Japan and Germany.  Both the German and Japanese CD share the same design.  They're actually called Target discs because they look like target scopes.  The way to distinguish the difference is by looking at the labeling on the outside rim of the disc.  It mentions where the discs are printed.

Only the discs were pressed in Japan and Germany.  The discs themselves were housed in cardboard picture covers, in a unique longbox.  The longboxes themselves and the cardboard sleeves were printed in the US.  There are no variations of these covers.  Only the discs.  Of the discs, there are three of these gatefold versions.

This is the Japanese target CD.  The sku number is 0 75992-52862 7.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY (CS) 4-25286 REISSUE

This is the second version of "Around The World In A Day".  It's a reissue from Warner Bros.  Everything is the same down to the serial and sku number.  The difference is in the actual insert.  Instead of the forest rainbow painting inside, the printing is black lettering on white.  The spine is white lettering on black.

These reissue cassettes were sold at a discounted price.  Much like the versions that were sold with holes punched in the spines.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY (CS) 4-25286

This was my first copy of the album.  Not only was the cover colorful and interesting, the cassette was unlike any I'd ever seen before.  I doubt very much this was the first clear cassette with the black insert to highlight the lettering, but it was the first I'd seen.  There are many versions of the cassette.

I've got copies of this cassette that say AR on the cassette directly under the serial number below the Paisley Park label, and some that say SR.  I'm not sure what the difference is and I've never found an explanation online for what it means exactly.

The sku barcode on the insert is 0 7599-25286-4.  It should be noted you can find many copies of this cassette sold at a discounted price.  The Paisley Park logo on the spine is punched out on these copies.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY (LP) 1-25286

Although there are multiple versions of this record on LP, this is the standard version sold in record stores across the U.S.

The outer jacket actually has a wrap around part.  That's where the Paisley Park logo is located.  The most colorful and dynamic of all subsequent Paisley Park releases, this LP artwork is amazing!  So much original material happening in the graphics.

The actual skew number for this release is 0 7599-25286-1.  The barcode is located on the wrap around portion of the sleeve and can be seen in the third pic.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY (8-TRACK) S124370

On April 22, 1985 Prince's seventh studio album was released on the Paisley Park label.  It was the first album released on Paisley Park and a bit of a radical move by Prince who many expected to follow "Purple Rain" with another rock/funk workout.

Instead, he delivered the more introspective and psychedelic "Around The World In A Day".  At the height of his popularity, Prince opted out of releasing a record that would become a formula of sorts and challenged his audience with something more complex and forward thinking.  A brave move to be sure.  And not one people expected.

Prince is an artist many of us grew up with.  As a young person, I believed only the music I was listening to had any value.  I didn't believe anything else was worth hearing.  Of course, my opinion changed as my musical exposure changed.  And most of the progress can be traced directly to Prince and the music he brought to my attention.

Of all the albums on Paisley Park label, "Around The World In A Day" probably has the most versions.  This particular entry will focus on one of the 8-track releases.  In my research of this release, I've determined there were two distinct 8-track releases.  Neither were commercially available in retail stores.  They were produced by music clubs for sale to their members.

One was manufactured and distributed by RCA Music Club and the other was through Columbia House.  The Columbia House release featured a black casing and had the serial number W8 25286.  The RCA version features a cream colored casing and the serial number S124370.

Of the two, I've only located the RCA edition.  However, I was able to purchase it in its original cover.  In near mint condition.

The versions of Prince albums appearing on 8-track are limited to only the first 3 Paisley Park albums.  At least that's my understanding.  I recently watched "Parade" 8-track sealed in original packaging sell for over $400 on eBay.

The songs play in continuous sequence on 8-tracks.  There are four sections and each contains songs or portions of songs.

Here is the tracklist as it appears on my 8-track.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - KISS (7" VINYL) 7-28751 - ALTERNATE COVER

Yesterday we looked at the 7" vinyl single for "Kiss".  The commercially sold record.  Today we look at the alternate cover version of the same release.  The serial number and the labeling are identical on both versions.  The front cover is also the same.

The difference between the two is the back cover.  On this version, the Paisley Park logo is actually printed on the back sleeve in the bottom right hand corner.  You can see the logo in black to the right of the Venus De Milo statue.

As far as I can tell, that is the only difference between the two covers.  There may be other reasons for the difference.  Such as different print editions of the same single.  But I don't know enough about record pressing to make that distinction.

What I do know is they're different and that's enough to make it worth having both as far as I'm concerned.

PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION - KISS (7" VINYL) 7-28751

"Kiss" is the first single from the "Parade" soundtrack.  It was released for commercial sale in the US on February 05, 1986.  The initial release for the single was vinyl.  Both 7" and 12" versions.  There are two versions of this 7" single.  I believe this one is the standard version most readily available with the other being the alternate.  The difference is a small variance in the cover art.  Since I have copies of both, I'll follow this one up with the alternate tomorrow.

The version of 'Kiss' appearing on this single is considered the single version.  The second track, 'b Or $' is a true b-side.  A b-side is a song not included on the main album release and is exclusively limited to release on the single.

The story behind 'Kiss' is rather intense.  Supposedly, at the request of Mazarati, Prince provided an snippet acoustic demo of a song idea.  David Z. worked on the song and Prince returned to find the version of 'Kiss' we're familiar with today.  David Z. fleshed out the music and finished the lyrics, however, he does not receive a writing credit.  Prince is credited as the sole author of 'b Or $' by the Library of Congress copyright info.  However, the credit on the vinyl is Prince and the Revolution.

KAHORU KOHIRUIMAKI - TIME THE MOTION (CD) 29K2-1002

So the whole point of this blog is to showcase US Paisley Park releases and help collectors find things they're looking for.  Why then, (you ask yourself), is the first entry about a CD that was never actually released in the US?

The answer is simply this...  I include certain international releases as part of my collection when they were never made commercially available for sale as a US release.

My understanding of the album is essentially that Prince or representatives of Paisley Park didn't actively pursue or attempt to sign Kahoru to the label.  Prince was approached by his Japanese tour promoter to contribute songs for her next album.  In collaboration with Levi Seacer, Jr., Prince laid down two tracks, 'Mind Bells' and 'Bliss' in the summer of 1989.  The songs are credited to Prince and Levi Seacer, Jr. with Kahoru Kohiruimaki adding Japanese lyrics.

She essentially overdubbed her vocals on top of the finished tracks and voila, her record was complete.  The disc hit the shelves on November 11, 1989.  Most sources I've researched list the disc as a joint release between Paisley Park and TDK.  However, one source lists Paisley Park as the label with TDK handling distribution.  TDK Records logo appears on the cover, the back and on the disc.  Another label, probably a vanity label called Pisces also appears on the disc and the back.  Paisley Park appears on the back and the disc.  Because the label is accurately displayed, I believe the connection is more than just a cosmetic addition to the artwork.  There is an Obi strip included with new copies of the release.  I don't know if the album is still in print.

Sadly, because most information I can locate concerning this release is in Japanese, I don't know of any alternate releases.  I'm not sure if the album was released on cassette or vinyl.  If anyone has any information concerning this release, please feel free to send it along.

This item was given to me for my birthday one year.  Considering most copies of this disc sell on eBay for around $50 and the asking price on collector's sites often reaches $100, it was one of the most generous and exciting gifts I've ever received.
